Honda Motor Co. is recalling 42,100 of its 2016-model Civic small cars in the U.S. to replace improperly assembled piston/piston rod assemblies.
Honda issued a stop-sale for about 34,000 of the targeted vehicles in the U.S. last month.
The callback involves cars powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. If their piston assemblies fail, the engine could seize and be destroyed. The failure also could cause a fire.
Honda says the problem is missing or incorrectly installed C-shaped spring clips in the sides of the pistons. These so-called circlips retain the wrist pin that connects the piston to the piston rod. If the clips come loose or are missing entirely, the pin can slide out of position and damage the engine bore.
Dealers will remove and repair recalled engines as needed. Honda says it will be ready to launch the recall this summer.
