Honda Motor Co. is recalling 143,000 vehicles in Japan to replace Daicel Corp. airbag inflators that were made with the wrong propellant.
The callback was prompted by a Daicel airbag that failed to deploy in a crash. Honda tells Bloomberg News the recalled devices contain a propellant that generates “inappropriate velocity.”
Daicel says it has halted production of the suspect devices and is working with Honda to coordinate the callback. The campaign is unrelated to Honda’s massive recall of defective Takata Corp. inflators. Honda notes that the targeted Daicel units have not been used as replacements for the flawed Takata devices.
