Honda Motor Co. is recalling 143,000 small cars in the U.S. to cure a software flaw that could cause the front wheels to lock up.
The callback involves 2014-2015 model Civic sedans and 2015 model Fit mini-hatchbacks. The flawed software, which controls the cars' continuously variable transmission, can put more strain on the system's drive pulley shaft than it was designed to tolerate.
If the shaft breaks, it could seize the transmission and lock the front wheels. Honda reports no crashes caused by the defect. The company plans to begin the recall in about two weeks.
