Honda Motor Co. predicts its American sales will reach a five-year high of at least 1.46 million vehicles this year compared with 1.15 million units in 2011, Bloomberg News reports.
American demand for Honda and Acura vehicles jumped 19% to 817,900 units in the first seven months of 2012, including a 45% surge to 116,900 units in July.
John Mendel, the carmaker's U.S. sales chief, tells Bloomberg that Honda's North American plants are running at 20%-30% above straight-time capacity. He expects the company's new Accord midsize sedan and updated Civic compact car to accelerate U.S. sales growth in the second half of this year.
