Honda Motor Co. is recalling another 784,000 vehicles in Japan to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators that may explode when triggered by a crash.
The new campaign, which mirrors an expanded callback in the U.S., targets passenger-side front airbag inflators in such models as the Fit minicar, Civic sedan and Odyssey minivan. Affected vehicles were built between 2003 and 2009.
Honda and more than a dozen other carmakers have so far recalled about 100 million vehicles to replace Takata inflators. Last month The Nikkei said Honda plans to expand its Takata recalls to some 50 million devices worldwide.
Analysts say the industry total is likely to rise as manufacturers turn to newer vehicles that use similar Takata inflators.
