Honda Motor Co. has broadened a recall launched in July to replace defective airbag inflators in about 5 million vehicles sold in 13 high-humidity states and territories.
The original action covered 2003-2005 Accord and Civic sedans, CR-V and Pilot crossovers and Acura MDX crossovers; 2003-2004 Odyssey minivan and Element MPVs; 2005 model Acura RL sedans and 2006 model Ridgeline pickup trucks.
The expanded recall adds 2001-2002 model Civics, 2002 model CR-Vs and 2002 model Odysseys and Elements. Honda says it doesn't yet know how many vehicles are included in the new callback.
Carmakers, Takata and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have been struggling for months to determine how many vehicles are equipped with the faulty airbag inflators. Humid conditions apparently make the devices, which have been blamed for four deaths, more likely to explode when triggered.
