Honda Motor Co. will launch its fuel-cell-powered Clarity sedan in California later this year with a monthly lease price just under $500. The car is expected to cost about $60,000 when retail sales begin sometime thereafter.
Lease pricing is the same for the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Tucson fuel-cell vehicles. Toyota has said its car will retail for about $57,000.
Honda will debut the five-passenger Clarity in California because the state has more publicly accessible hydrogen fueling stations—five—than any other. The company says seven more such stations are scheduled to come online by year-end.
California has vowed to open about 100 stations over the next several years to support its zero-emission-vehicle sales goals. In the meantime, Honda says it will limit Clarity sales to the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas.
