The oldest known Batmobile will be auctioned on Dec. 6 by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.

The 1963 car has an opening bid price of $112,500. Restored last year, the vehicle is warehoused in northern California and won't be displayed ahead of the auction.

Heritage describes the retro-styled Batmobile as the first to be licensed by DC Comics, publisher of the Batman comic books. It appeared three years before the campy Batman television program debuted with an entirely different, bubble-roof Batmobile inspired by the 1955 Lincoln Futura concept.

The 17-foot-long auction car rides on a 1956 Oldsmobile 88 chassis and is equipped with an Olds 324 cu.in. Rocket engine. The design, which features an enormous dorsal fin, was conceived in 1960 and finished three years later, according to Heritage.

The car debuted with an all-silver paint job but was repainted in signature Batman black and red a few years later. The original owner sold it for $200, and the car lay abandoned for most of the following 40 years.
