The Web site bases its analysis on insurance rates for more than 1,500 models from six major insurers in every state. The analysis notes that actual rates vary dramatically from state to state. One example: Insurance for a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse crossover costs about $800 per year in Maine but nearly $2,300 in Michigan.

Following the GT-R at the top of Insure.com's list is the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG convertible at $3,573 and Dodge SRT Viper at $3,318.

At the low-cost end of the list is the 2015 Jeep Wrangler SUV at $1,134, the Jeep Patriot Sport SUV at $1,136 and the Honda CR-V crossover at $1,160.

Insure.com notes that insurance rate are indexed to the price of the vehicle and the size of the likely claim. Not surprisingly, the highest rates involve high-performance cars that cost more than $100,000, produce 500 hp or more and can hit a top speed of about 200 mph.
