Google Plans In-Car Android Operating System

Google Inc. is developing a version of its Android operating system that would be built into cars and allow drivers to access the Internet without a smartphone, sources tell Reuters.

The platform will debut when Google introduces its next-generation Android M smartphone operating system in about a year, according to Reuters. Google declines to comment.

The new system could become the car's overall infotainment operating system by controlling the navigation and entertainment features. Unlike a smartphone, it would always be "on," regardless of whether the driver was toting a smartphone.

Reuters notes the platform also could tap the vehicle's GPS, exterior cameras, object sensors, fuel gauge signal and other data generators to provide enhanced services. One example: The system might detect a low fuel level and display a Google map to show the driver how to find the nearest service station.
