Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. confirms that its next-generation GT-R supercar will use a hybrid powertrain to boost performance and lower emissions.
Nissan engineering, sales and marketing boss Andy Palmer says the GT-R is no exception to his belief that all cars inevitably will require electrification. Palmer did not elaborate on when the hybrid GT-R will arrive, nor did he provide details on its development.
The GT-R, first introduced in 2007, is currently powered by a 545-hp twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6. Media reports suggest the hybrid version will produce a combined 600 hp from a V-6 engine and an electric motor.
Analysts say the hybrid version likely won't appear until 2018 or 2019 when the car is scheduled for a complete makeover.
