Mark Reuss, head of global product development for General Motors Co., crashed the 2019 Corvette ZR1 pace car he was driving ahead of yesterday’s IndyCar race on Belle Isle in Detroit.

The rear of the car lost grip entering the circuit’s tricky Turn 2, looping the car into a head-on collision with a concrete wall that lines the track. Neither Reuss nor a racing official passenger sustained any significant injuries. The crash delayed the start of the race by more than 30 minutes.

Reuss is an experienced high-performance driver who has piloted pace cars at speed around the same circuit many times before without incident. “Sorry does not describe it,” the abashed Reuss later posted on Facebook.
