General Motors Co. reports global sales of 2.42 million vehicles in January-March 2015, about 70,000 units fewer than Volkswagen Group.
Toyota Motor Corp., which likely outsold both companies, will post its first-quarter sales on May 1.
GM's deliveries for the period jumped 9% to 961,100 units in China and 6% to 789,800 units in North America. But sales sagged in Europe (-14% to 291,600 units), South America (-15% to 179,500) and remaining markets (-2% to 199,100).
GM says its first-quarter sales advanced for all brands except Chevrolet, whose volume declined 4% to 1.07 million units.
