Members of the Canadian Auto Workers union at General Motors Co. have ratified a tentative agreement with the company by a 73:27 margin.
The parties settled on a deal last week that will freeze wages and make it cheaper for GM to hire new workers at lower pay. But the accord protects the pensions of current employees and grants C$9,000 (US$9,200) in bonuses over the four years of the pact.
The company agreed to delay the closing of an assembly plant in Oshawa, Ont., by one year to June 2014. GM also promised to invest C$675 million in its Canadian facilities and add 900 jobs most of which probably will be filled by existing workers now on layoff.
CAW members at Chrysler Group LLC will vote on Saturday and Sunday on the tentative contract the union reached with the company earlier this week.
