GMC has asked its dealers about the merit in adding such a model, according to the Journal. It reports the company told them the vehicle could resurrect styling cues and performance capabilities of GM's extinct Hummer brand, whose popularity was ravished five years ago by high fuel prices and the financial crisis.
GM's four brands already offer a large array of SUVs and crossovers. But none emulates the pure offroad image of the Wrangler. Last year Wrangler sales in the U.S. surged 13% to 175,300 units.
The Journal says GM has not decided whether to move forward with the project, which is still in the discussion stage.
