General Motors Co. plans to recall 474,000 of its 2007-2010 Saturn Aura and 2008-2010 Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 sedans to repair a defect that could allow the vehicle to roll away while the gearshift appears to be in Park.

The campaign covers 474,000 vehicles in North America, 90% of which were sold in the U.S.

Tabs on the transmission's shift cable could break and fall off. If that happens, the vehicle could still be in gear when the shifter indicates the transmission is in Park. Under those conditions, the car could roll away and crash after the driver exits the vehicle.

GM says the recall, which as not yet been scheduled, also will fix a related problem involving the same cables.
