General Motors Co. plans to spend $789 million to update its plant in Spring Hill, Tenn., and prepare it to make an all-new, high-efficiency engine.
Construction will begin next month and continue for several years, according to the company. GM has committed more than $2 billion to the facility since 2010, including a $148 million project announced in February that will prepare the plant to begin making V-8 engines late this year.
The Spring Hills facility opened in 1990 to build plastic-bodied Saturn vehicles. It later assembled the Chevrolet Traverse midsize crossover vehicle and, between 2012 and last October, the Chevrolet Equinox small SUV.
The plant current makes Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia midsize crossovers. It also supplies 4-cylinder engines to GM factories worldwide.
