Canadian labor union Unifor and General Motors Co. labor negotiators are to resume contract talks today after the union says it detected “some progress” in GM’s position.
Worries about job security prompted about 2,500 Unifor workers at GM’s CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ont., to walk out on Sept. 17. It’s the first strike at a Canadian auto plant since 1996.
The union is demanding that GM designate CAMI, which makes the hot-selling Chevrolet Equinox midsize crossover vehicle, as its lead plant for the vehicle. Doing so would mean that any production cuts or layoffs first be applied at the company’s two Equinox plants in Mexico.
CAMI was GM’s sole source for the Equinox until April. Since then the carmaker has added Equinox production at two factories in Mexico. The company also relocated output of the GMC Terrain, a variant of the Equinox, from CAMI to Mexico.
