General Motors Co. will reduce its five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty on Chevrolet and GMC vehicles to five years and 60,000 miles beginning with 2016 models, Automotive News reports.
GM also will reduce the number of free service visits offered on most new Buick, Chevrolet and GMC models to two from four during the first two years of ownership.
GM says it is making the cuts because most buyers of non-luxury brands don't attach high value to free routine maintenance or lengthy warranty coverage. The company says it will redirect the cost of those programs to other unspecified retail initiatives that owners perceive as more valuable.
