General Motors Co. plans to recall more than 10,000 of its full-size vans to replace fuel filler pipes that can rust, leak and cause a fire.

The campaign involves 2003-2004 model Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans sold in 20 snowbelt states, the District of Columbia and Canada. All affected vans are equipped with driver-side cargo doors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a protective shield over the fuel filler pipe may trap road salt and other debris that could cause the pipe to corrode. If the pipe is perforated, the "check engine" light may illuminate. A larger perforation would allow gasoline to leak during refueling.
