General Motors Co. plans to add a second truck-building shift at its factory in Oshawa, Ont., a year from now, according to the Globe and Mail.
The Toronto newspaper cites a memo to hourly workers from their Unifor union. GM said previously it plans to phase out production of the Chevrolet Equinox SUV this summer and replace it with an unspecified new truck program. The Oshawa complex also make Buick Regal, Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac XTS sedans.
GM is expected to assemble Chevy Silverado fullsize pickup trucks at Oshawa using bodies supplied by GM’s truck plant in Fort Wayne, Ind. The plan would add about 500 jobs at the factory, according to Unifor.
