General Motors Co. has begun making electric motors and drivetrains for its new Chevrolet Spark electric city car at its Baltimore Operations plant in White Marsh, Md.
The facility, which also builds transmissions for heavy-duty pickup trucks, was upgraded for electric motor production with the help of a $105 million loan from the U.S. Dept. of Energy.
The Spark EV will be built at the GM assembly plant in Changwon, South Korea, that makes the piston-powered Spark. The EVs will be equipped there with electric motors from Maryland and lithium-ion batteries made by A123 Systems Inc. in Livonia, Mich.
The Spark EV is scheduled to go on sale in California and Oregon this summer. Distribution will expand to Europe, Canada and Korea later this year. GM says it will announce the car's pricing, range and fuel efficiency rating in coming weeks. The company has hinted that the new EV will cost about $32,500.
