General Motors Co. has created a new "global product integrity" team to help the company monitor and improve the safety of its vehicles.
CEO Mary Barra, who announced the new group on Monday during an event in New York City, offered no details about its size, members or approach. But she likens the team's mission to an earlier focused effort by GM to improve the handling characteristics of its U.S. vehicles.
The new group will be part of GM's worldwide product development effort, reporting directly to Mark Reuss, who heads global product development, purchasing and supply chain operations. Jeff Boyer, named last month to the newly created position of vice president of global vehicle safety, also reports to Reuss.
Last week Barra launched an internal "Speak Up for Safety" program to encourage GM employees to alert their bosses when they see a safety issue. The campaign aims to remove "perceived and real barriers to candid conversations," according to the company.
