General Motors Co. and its joint ventures in China sold a September record 319,900 vehicles compared with 277,700 in the same month last year.

Demand for SAIC-GM-Wuling models grew 15% to 159,900 units. Sales of Shanghai GM vehicles advanced 20% to 158,800. The company's FAW-GM venture reports sales plunged 74% to 1,200.

By brand, Buick sales climbed 18% to 83,600 vehicles. Chevrolet rose 19% to 68,300 units, and Cadillac sales zoomed 51% to 6,800.

September's results pushed GM sales in China in the first nine months of 2014 to 2.58 million vehicles, up 12% compared with the same period in 2013.
