General Motors Co. is offering optional extended-warranty coverage on its Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC brand vehicles in the U.S.
Standard factory coverage is for 3 years/36,000 miles for Chevy and GMC products, and 4-year/50,000 miles for Buick and Cadillac vehicles. The new add-on coverage, which is available immediately through all U.S. GM dealers, covers 5 year/60,000 miles for the former brands and 6 years/70,000 miles for the latter nameplates.
GM says dealers will determine the cost of the coverage. The company suggests a range of $1,000-$2,000, depending on the type and price of vehicle.
GM says its extended warranty requires no claim form, has no deductible and continues to apply if the vehicle is sold. The cost of the option will be bundled into a vehicle’s sale or lease price.
Automotive News reports that some dealers believe the new coverage benefits the factory more than retailers, since it competes with the third-party extended coverage plans dealers already offer.
