General Motors Co. is recalling 38,100 Impala police sedans in the U.S. and Canada to replace front lower control arms that could break under severe operating conditions.

The campaign covers 2008-2012 police models only. GM says the control arms surpass the company's durability requirements for civilian use. The current Impala police sedan is capable of reaching a top speed of 150 mph.

GM plans to begin notifying police departments about the recall on Aug. 21. The company says there have been no reports of accidents related to lower control arm failure.
