General Motors Co. is recalling 196,400 Hummer H3 SUVs in North America to repair a heating and cooling system defect blamed for 42 fires that burned three people and destroyed two vehicles.
The campaign involves H3 SUVs built during the 2006-2010 model years and HT3 models made in the 2009-2010 model years.
The defect involves a ventilation fan motor controller that can overheat, melt plastic surrounding the model and start a fire. GM dealers will replace the module and its wiring harness.
