General Motors Co. is recalling 31,700 of its large SUVs in North America to fix a wiring problem that could cause the windshield wiper cover to overheat and catch fire. Only 6,400 of the vehicles have been delivered to customers.
The callback involves 2016 model Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia SUVs. GM says the covers were made with a defective tool that might allow electrical terminals to touch each other and short out.
GM says the overheating problem could cause the wiper motor cover to melt, smoke or catch fire. The company advises owners not to use the wipers until the cover is replaced and says it will provide a free loaner vehicle if necessary.
