General Motors Co. will publically introduce its sixth-generation Camaro sport coupe at a fan event on Detroit's Belle Isle on May 16. The car is expected to go on sale late this year.
The current model debuted in 2009 and hasn't undergone a significant redesign since. The replacement car will share GM's scalable Alpha rear-drive platform with the Cadillac ATS compact sport sedan and CTS midsize sport sedan.
GM will make all three models at its factory in Lansing, Mich. The current Camaro, which rides on GM's Zeta platform, is assembled in Oshawa, Ont.
Media reports predict the new car will be several inches shorter and at least 300 lbs lighter than the current model. They also say the powertrain lineup is likely to include a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as well as upgraded V-6 and V8 options.
