General Motors Co. broke ground Wednesday on the biggest parts warehousing and logistics facility it has built in the U.S. in 40 years.
The $65 million, 1.1 million-sq-ft facility is located in Burton, Mich., about 70 miles northwest of Detroit. It is twice the size of the existing center there, which will be closed when the new warehouse opens in early 2019.
The complex will package and store parts under the ACDelco and Genuine GM Parts brands for Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles sold in the U.S. The warehouse also will supply replacement parts for competitors.
GM says the center will have 84 shipping and receiving docks, up from 35 for the current facility. About 700 hourly and salaried workers will work at the site.
The carmaker will lease the warehouse from NorthPoint Development, which is building the center.
