General Motors Co. will introduce a lower-priced variant of its Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid in 2016, Reuters says.
Supplier sources tell the news service the optional model will have a smaller battery, shorter electric-only range and less standard equipment. GM is expected to produce a similar iteration for Europe, where the Volt is sold as the Opel Ampera.
The next-generation Volt and its budget-priced sibling are scheduled to go into production in 2016 at GM's factory in Hamtramck, Mich. Reuters says the new models will share a new platform with the redesigned Chevrolet Cruze due at about the same time.
Last year GM North American President Mark Reuss told reporters the next-generation Volt would be several thousand dollars cheaper to make. Reuters' sources say the low-price Volt will retail for about $5,000 less than the standard model, which is currently priced at about $35,000.
