General Motors Co. plans to recall another 1.4 million older models to address an underhood problem that could cause a fire. It’s the third time GM has attempted to fix the defect.
The new callback covers certain model Chevrolet Impala, Lumina and Monte Carlo; Buick Regal; Oldsmobile Intrigue; and Pontiac Grand Prix sedans made between 1997 and 2004. All affected cars are equipped with GM’s 3.8 liter V-6 engine.
Under hard braking, engine oil can splash onto the hot exhaust manifold and catch fire. GM recalled nearly 1.8 million cars in separate campaigns in 2008 and 2009 to remedy the defect. But the company says more than 1,300 of the recalled cars caught fire after being repaired.
GM tells Automotive News it is still finalizing a new and presumably more effective repair for the problem. All but 128,000 of the affected vehicles are in the U.S.
