General Motors Co. will spend $290 million in its Corvette sports car factory in Bowling Green, Ky., to install new technologies and manufacturing processes.

The investment is in addition to a $439 million paint shop expansion announced last year. The facility took over in 1981 as GM’s sole source for Corvettes.

The latest plant project comes as Car and Driver magazine cites an “impeccable source” who says the next-generation ‘Vette will be a mid-engine model that GM will unveil at the Detroit auto show in 2018. Rumors of a mid-engine configuration for the car have recurred for at least 20 years.
