General Motor Co. has appointed Mark Reuss, who has headed its global product group and Cadillac brand to take over as the company’s president, effective immediately.

Reuss, 55, succeeds Dan Ammann, 46, who stepped down on Jan. 1 to become CEO of GM’s California-based Cruise autonomous-vehicle software business.

His previous assignments at GM have included head of product development, purchasing and supply chain, president of GM North America and head of global engineering. He holds a bachelor of engineering degree from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from Duke University.

Reuss’s father Lloyd is a longtime GM executive who served as the carmaker’s president between 1990 and 1992. The younger Reuss, a lifelong racing enthusiast, joined GM as a student intern in 1983.
