Kenneth Feinberg the lawyer General Motors Co. hired to determine how to compensate victims of car crashes linked to a belatedly recalled faulty ignition switch met on Friday with Texas lawyers representing several hundred of those claimants.
GM says the talks were preliminary and did not get into specific claims or possible payments.
The carmaker appears committed to compensating actual injury victims and the families of 13 people who died in crashes associated with the flawed switches. GM is recalling 2.6 million cars that were built with the defective devices between 2003 and 2011. Reports suggest the company could announce a specific payment plan in June.
GM is resisting another group of lawsuits that seeks awards to offset claimed loss of vehicle value caused by the recall. The company argues that it is specifically shielded from claims of economic loss by the terms of its 2009 bankruptcy restructuring.
