General Motors Co. intends to boost production of its Chevrolet Volt extended-range hybrid sedan this year by as much as 20% over 2012 to 36,000 units, says Bloomberg News, which cites unidentified sources.

Cristi Landy, GM marketing director for small cars, tells the news service that intermittent halts in Volt output caused dealers in California, the plug-in hybrid's biggest market, to run out of vehicles three or four times last year.

GM sold about 30,000 units of the Volt and its European variant, the Opel Ampera, worldwide in 2012 half the company's original goal. Even so, U.S. Volt sales tripled last year to 23,500 vehicles.
