Mark Reuss, who heads global product development for General Motors Co., tells reporters in Detroit the company needs to add a low-cost car for emerging markets such as India.

Reuss was asked whether GM needs a new model to compete with vehicles such as Renault's upcoming $4,700 Kwid mini-crossover and Nissan's Datsun Redi GO variant. "Yes," he responded, without elaborating.

GM's least-expensive model in India today is the South Korean-made Chevrolet Spark, whose base price there is about $5,700.
