General Motors Co. is developing a new "Global B" cloud-based electrical platform that will allow motorists to wirelessly upload new features and functionality directly into future vehicles, Global Product Development Chief Mark Reuss tells reporters at a media event in Detroit.

Reuss says he expects the technology to be ready soon, but didn't provide any other details or timeline. The carmaker is studying Boeing Co. and military contractors on how to best implement the system with tight security protocols, Reuters reports.

Other carmakers are working on their own cloud-based systems. Reuters notes that Tesla's high-end Model S electric sedan allows drivers to download and install new features such as automated parking as they become available.
