General Motors Co. has hiked cash rebates on its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra fullsize pickup trucks by $2,000 to as much as $3,000 per vehicle. Analysts say various incentives on some of those trucks are as high as $7,000.

GM is eager to shrink its 139-day supply of big pickups, which is more than double the ideal level of inventory. Silverado and Sierra sales fell 10% last month compared with a 9% industrywide increase in the segment.

Analysts say the problem was the company's decision not to match competitors' big incentives, even though GM's pickup designs are among the oldest on the market.

The company, which had a 106-day stockpile of all vehicles on Dec. 1, also is sweetening the lease deal on the Chevy Cruze compact car, Malibu midsize sedan and Traverse fullsize crossover vehicle.
