General Motors Co. is hiring 500 information technology employees for a new center in Austin, Tex., as part of a move to bring most of its IT work in-house over the next three years.
By the end of 2015 GM expects to add about 10,000 software developers, project managers, database experts, business analysts and other IT specialists.
GM says it aims to boost the proportion of IT work done internally to 90% from 10% now. The project is being headed by Chief Information Officer Randy Mott, whom GM hired from Hewlett-Packard Co. in February. H-P, which acquired GM's Electronic Data Systems Corp. unit in 2008, currently handles much of the carmaker's IT work.
Mott says moving IT duties in-house will increase efficiency and foster innovation and development capability, thus enabling GM to bring new vehicles to market more quickly.
