General Motors Co. says it will invest $1 billion in India to consolidate production at its Talegaon factory in Maharashtra. The expansion will hike annual capacity at the plant to 220,000 units by 2025 from 130,000 units currently.

Under the plan, GM will shutter its Halol assembly facility in Gujarat in the second half of 2016. The Halol plant has capacity to make 110,000 Chevrolet Enjoy and Taveras MPVs and Chevrolet Cruze sedans.

The new investment is part of a four-year, $5 billion program GM announced on Monday to develop a new family of Chevrolet small vehicles for emerging markets. The cars will be produced locally in Brazil, China, Mexico and India.

GM says the Indian market will see 10 new Chevrolet-branded vehicles by 2020, beginning with the Trailblazer SUV in October and next-generation Spin mini-MPV in 2017. Chevy aims to double its market share in India and boost exports from the country to 40,000 units next year from about 19,000 vehicles in 2015.
