GM Aims to Double 40-mpg Vehicle Lineup in Four Years

General Motors Co. says it expects to offer eight models in the U.S. by 2017 with highway fuel economy ratings of least 40 mpg.
GM has four Chevrolet 2013 models that meet that goal today: the Cruze Eco small sedan, Sonic minicar, Spark electric and Volt extended-range hybrid.
The company is adding two more 40-milers as 2014 models this year: a diesel-powered version of the Chevy Cruze on sale now and the Volt-derived Cadillac ELR due by year-end.
GM's just-released 2012 Sustainability Report says the company is committed to boosting average fuel economy of its U.S. new vehicles more than 18% by 2016 from 2011 levels. Doing so will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from those vehicles by more than 15%, according to the company.
In Europe, GM estimates that a similar fuel-saving effort, coupled with a shift in fleet mix, will cut CO2 emissions from the vehicles it sells there 27% by 2020 from current levels.
