General Motors Co. has appointed Mike Ableson to the newly created position of vice president of strategy and global portfolio planning, The Detroit News reports.

General Motors Co. has appointed Mike Ableson to the newly created position of vice president of strategy and global portfolio planning, The Detroit News reports.

Ableson will oversee GM's programs for emerging autonomous vehicle, connected car and urban mobility technologies, including car- and ride-sharing services. He will report directly to CEO Mary Barra on the strategy side, and to President Dan Ammann on the portfolio planning side, a GM spokesperson tells the News.

A 32-year GM veteran, Ableson most recently served as vice president of global product planning and program management. Prior to that he was vice president of vehicle engineering.
