General Motors Co. says it will recall some 243,000 small hatchback cars in the U.S. and Canada to replace passenger-side Takata Corp. airbag inflators which might explode when triggered.
The callback covers Pontiac Vibe models produced in 2003-2007. The Vibe is a variant of the Toyota Corolla Matrix, which Toyota recalled earlier this week for the same reason.
Like several other carmakers, GM is extending earlier inflator recalls after Takata announced as many as 34 million of the units it supplied for vehicles in the U.S. could misfire. The flaw has been linked with seven fatalities and more than 100 injuries.
