GKN plc’s driveline operations has opened a plant in Villagran, Mexico, to build its next-generation XLi propshaft.
The supplier invested $18 million in the 129,000-sq-ft facility, which joins a second GKN plant in Villagran that makes components for constant velocity joints. At full capacity, the new factory is expected to produce more than one million propshafts per year and employ 380 people.
GKN describes the VLi as a high-performance propshaft that can operate at higher rotational speeds than previous designs. The lightweight propshaft also can be assembled faster and is easier to integrate with other components, according to the supplier.
The company's customers include Audi, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Volkswagen.
