GKN plc says its new VL3 constant velocity joint system, which is being introduced in the all-new BMW 7 Series sedan, is lighter, more efficient and stronger than previous units.

Designed for rear-wheel-drive platforms, the assembly features a monobloc-tubular shaft and face spline connection to the wheel hub. The design provides a weight savings of about 9 lbs, according to GKN.

The company says the system can fit in a 10% smaller space while maintaining torque performance, or boost torque capacity by as much as 27% compared with a similarly sized CV joint. Other purported benefits include improved noise, vibration and harshness characteristics and a more refined ride.
