GKN plc's driveline business has increased the manufacturing space of its Newton, N.C., facility by 25% in preparation of new contracts the company is expecting for its all-wheel-drive technologies. The expansion is part of a $100 million investment in the facility announced last year.
Citing independent forecasts by IHS, GKN says North American production of awd vehicles is expected to rocket 21% to 3 million units by the 2020 model year.
The Newton facility makes awd clutches and final-drive and power-transfer units. Opened in 1986, the Newton facility was acquired by GKN in 2011 when the company purchased Getrag Corp.'s awd component business.
