Legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro has quit as head of the Italdesign Giugiaro SpA firm he founded in 1968. He also is giving up his title as honorary chairman.

Giugiaro is credited with the exterior design of such cars as the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT and Brera, Audi 80, De Tomaso Mangusta, Fiat Panda and Punto, Lotus Esprit, Maserati Ghibli and Bora and Volkswagen Golf.

The 76-year-old sold 90% of his company to Volkswagen AG's Audi unit several years ago. He sold the remaining 10% stake to Audi at the end of June. Giugiaro's son Febrizio, 50, also has quit Italdesign.
