Ghosn’s Jail Time Extended Another 10 Days

A court in Tokyo has approved a prosecutors’ request to extend the incarceration of former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn for an additional 10 days.
The latest extension means Ghosn won’t be eligible for release until Jan. 11. But prosecutors are able to extend his stay in two more 10-day increments by filing additional charges and obtaining another court-approved extension.
Ghosn was arrested on Nov. 19 on suspicion of failing to report some $43 million in deferred compensation but wasn’t formally charged until Dec. 10. He was then accused by prosecutors of assigning personal financial trading losses to Nissan, which extended his jail time to the end of December.
A Ghosn associate, Nissan board member Greg Kelly, also was arrested in Japan on Nov. 19. He was released on bail last week but for now is required to remain in Japan. Both men have declared through their lawyers that are innocent of all charges.
