A judge in Tokyo has agreed to return former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn to jail to April 10 so prosecutors can question him about new charges of financial wrongdoing.
Under Japanese law, prosecutors can extend the jail time for another 10 days before bringing formal charges or releasing him. Ghosn’s arrest on April 4, his fourth related to alleged misdeeds at Nissan, came 30 days after he was released on $9 million bond.
The judge has already turned down an appeal by Ghosn’s legal team. Japanese legal experts tell Reuters that re-arresting someone already released on bail is very rare. But media reports note that the latest charges, that Ghosn diverted Nissan funds for his personal use, appear more serious.
